A short read on a few myths surrounding your safety and security while online. The bottom line is that you are responsible for your own safety and your own security. Government can do things to help, but the effectiveness of government efforts rely upon the efforts of private citizens in their day-to-day activities.
I’ve fallen into this bad habit on occasion as well. The laptop is handy, I just need to check a few emails…I wonder if there is wifi available here…lucky me, I’m getting a pretty good signal…
Take heed, just because you can access the Internet doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. It is not difficult for hackers to set up a wifi connection that listens for and steals whatever information passes through the access point.
Make sure you know what you’re connecting to, who is running it, and utilize a good level of security while doing it. If the access point is not secure then don’t do anything over the connection with personal or private information.
